It should go down with very little effort. Maybe the previous owner bent it towing. I've read on this board the poles can bend easily. I limit any towables to two adults. Plus it keeps the kids in the water and the responsibles onboard looking out for the rope so it doesn't get sucked through the pump. Ask me how I know...

Bent pylon?

Check the detent clip on the lower end of the stationary tube by looking in the engine bay. Maybe the pylon was pulled out farther than the normal stop and is now hung up on the clip. When working properly the pylon will nearly fall down on it's own once pushed off the detent.
If this is a used boat it's likely the PO bent the pole from misuse. If you hammer it down with a mallet you might never be able to pull it up again, so I wouldn't advise that. Instead pull it out first, roll it on a known flat surface and see if it is bent. Straighten or replace it.
Our experience is that this pole can withstand any slalom skier no matter how aggressive, but it can fail when pulling a tube if the slack is quickly taken from the line and the pipe is jerked. With proper use it can pull smaller tubes. I would not advise towing a disabled boat with it.
I have a tower so I pull all tubes and wakeboards off the tower post. But we doo all skiers off the pylon with no trouble.

I have a 99 challenger 1800 and my pole would not extend, it was tsuck in the down position. After some delicate wok with a hammer I got it out. As the previous person states, it was bent. I used sand paper to take off the scoring from me hammering it out and kept sanding until the pole would go in and out without any extra pressure. The pole should literally fall back down when you apply gentle pressure. I also added some grease to the pole to help with this. I intend to have a new pole made by a freind. I want to add an inch or two which should be safe, it will also be straight.
